Q/A music knowledge part 5
Is it possible to learn Indian classical vocal music after 35 years of age, because your vocal instrument becomes rigid compared to young age?
Well you are right the best age to learn indian classical music is young age but this does not mean that you can not learn classical at the mature age. In fact it becomes lot easier to follow the basic rules of classical music in mature age when your vocal cords are fully developed. So in my opinion there is no harm, you can still learn. Why do some singers maintain their voice over time and others stop sounding good?
The singers must always keep in mind that daily practice is a must. The practice should be at least for an hour or two. The singers who are habitual of practicing daily, their vocal cords remain active and enhance the flexibility that may keep their voice fresh and strong over the time. Like any other exercise the vocal exercise is very very essential. The basic technique is to practice and to choose songs that have been composed in lower octave, then in the middle octave and finally in the high octave. This will make your breath and frequency and range much better. I keep on answering the questions related to music. I feel it would be beneficial for you if you visit my blog:

How do you sing high notes without hurting your throat? I am trying to sing notes between my falsetto and head voice but I am hurting myself doing that.
First of all you need to know your voice range. The range in which you can sing with comfort. once you know then the second step is to practice one higher note each week, the next week you can add another higher note. This will gradually relax and enhance the flexibility of you vocal cords. Practice must be done on daily basis and you will see the difference in two months that the high notes that were hurting you throat can now easily be sung. just like any other body exercise , singing practice is also an exercise which should be done on daily basis. Why can’t I stop straining my voice when singing? My voice always end up fatigued, sore and hoarse. How do I sing easier?
The main reason for straining, fatigued and sore voice is the vocal range. When you try to sing the compositions that are not suitable for you voice range, such things happen. You need to know you comfort zone in which you are sing notes with ease. But in my opinion the singers must practice, one lower note of their original range and add one higher note above their vocal range. This will gradually relax your vocal cords and it will be lot easier for you to sing with ease and without hurting your voice. You need to do singing practice on daily basis to overcome your very genuine problem. I keep on answering questions related to music, so may be my blog would be of interest to you, please read:

How come my younger sister (8) is so good at singing while my hard work on singing is always easily defeated by her? Is singing a talent?
Well the answer is within your question. This is an established fact that some people are born with extra ordinary talents and singing is one of them. There are people who work hard to make their voices softer, sharper or enhance bass in their voices but it seems that everything is going waste. Your sister is born with extra ordinary singing talent and you need to accept it. But at the same time do not give up your hard work, it would certainly be beneficial for you. Is listening to music good for your brain?
Over the years it has been seen that music plays vital role in the development of the brain and helps in its performance. I have been the music teacher over 30 years and have worked with special children too, I have noticed that there is immense improvement in their memory and also that their aggressive behaviour has turned into a pleasant mannered child or even the grown ups. I would highly recommend that each person must listen to the music to relax his/her nerves from the daily routine duties and mental stresses. Music has shown its affects on animals too.
